Historical Note
William Augustus Martin (1871-1955) came to Wyoming Territory circa 1887. He engaged in various employments, eventually becoming a guard at the Wyoming Penitentiary in Laramie. He met and married Birdie Gooding in Laramie in 1896. In 1899 they moved to Waverly, Nebraska. Martin wrote poetry and histories of Colorado and Wyoming.

"Negus in Johnson County: a History of the Johnson County Stock War" is an unpublished manuscript by William A. Martin. According to the manuscript, it relates the experiences of Martin and his friend Charles Negus (Solon) during the Johnson County War of 1892. Also included is a newspaper clipping regarding William A. Martin.
