Content DescriptionReturn to Top
This collection contains a suede-bound scrapbook created by Alma V. Johnson while working as a launderess (colloquially called a "bubble queen") at the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park. In late August 1929, Johnson and her co-workers toured Yellowstone on a two-day trip around the park. They traveled a loop, starting from Geyser Basin, traveling south toward Mystic Falls, then east around Yellowstone lake, up to the Grand Canyon where they stayed at the the girls dormitory for the first night of the trip. On the second day they traveled from the canyon up Dunraven Pass to Mammoth before returning to the Old Faithful Lodge. The scrapbook includes photographs of Johnson's trip around the park, and a three page hand-written rembrance of the journey written on Yellowstone Park Hotel Co. stationery. The remembrance is dated August 31, 1929 and is accompanied by a typed transcription. The photos largely document people, scenery, and park attractions. The back of the photo album features group photos of workers at the Old Faithful Lodge. A small pamphlet titled "What to Do at Old Faithful" is also included in the collecition.
Many of the photos in the scrapbook are labeled and includes the names of the people who traveled with Johnson on the trip or people she encountered. People mentioned in the alubm and the remembrance include Benjamin Frankin (B.F.) Moore, a retired tour driver (also called a "gear jammer"), Mr. and Mrs. O. Boyce who ran the Creek Road Camp, and fellow "bubble queens" Ina Hasty, Ebha Hjort (alternatley spelled Ebba), Alice Oakland, Myrna Kran, Amy Bjorkstrand, Cecil Ellis, and Helen Kosik.
