Historical Note

President Clemen created the Office of Public Relations in 1935 to coordinate college publicity and student recruiting activities. He appointed Victor Shawe as the first Director of Public Relations. The current Whitman College Communications Office, part of the Development and College Relations group, is responsible for promoting Whitman College as well as communicating the goals and accomplishments of the college people and departments. The Communications Office publishes Whitman Magazine and manages the college website, media relations, and other communications services.

Content Description

The collection consists of records of the Whitman College Communications Office, dated 1882 to 2012. The collection is divided into four series: I. News Service, II. Public events, III. Scholarships, fellowships, grants, and awards, and IV. Subject files. The News Service series dates from 1924 to 2012 and contains directories, news releases, and events calendars. The News Service series contains one sub-series, Images. The Images sub-series contains photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets used in preparation for Whitman College publications such as brochures, catalogs, Whitman Magazine, WhitNews, and others. The Public events series dates from 1954 to 2012 and includes information on public events held at Whitman, including the Arts and Lectures series and Summer Dance Lab. The Scholarships, fellowships, grants, and awards series dates from 1959 to 2010 and includes information prepared for public dissemination regarding Whitman students and faculty who receives awards, scholarships, and other honors. The Subject files series dates from 1882 to 2011 and includes information on Whitman College faculty and administration.

Administrative Information

Acquisition Information

Transferred to the Whitman College and Northwest Archives from Communications Office. Dates of transfer and accession numbers are unavailable for a large portion of the collection.

Processing Note

Original folder titles were retained whereever available. Photographic materials were housed in mylar sleeves, and most materials were rehoused in acid-free folders. Newspaper clippings were removed from the collection, as they are available via newspaper databases and other sources.
