Historical Note

Lawrence W. Smith, known as Larry, was a photographer active in Portland, Oregon in the 1940s and again several decades later. Smith was a friend of Minor White, who was also active in Portland in the late 1930s, and took a signature portrait of White which is the earliest known of the photographer using his camera. Smith was president of the Oregon Camera Club in 1938, when he "dropped out of the club to be married," according to Robinson. Smith's work focused on nature and form, and shows the influence of Edward Weston, White, and other members of their circle. His relationship with other photographers is documented by a series of portraits that include Andel Adams, Minor White, Brett Weston, Gerald Robinson, and Ray Atkeson. Smith captured western landscapes and images of the Cape Cod seashore. Although a number of his images were exhibited and known to other photographers, Smith never achieved fame and reportedly worked as a warehouseman. He was married to Gladys. Larry Smith died in 1999.
