Historical Note

The office of Vice President for Academic Affairs was created in 1973 as part of a major reorganization of the University of Utah central administration. The office assumed the duties of three former positions: Provost, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Academic Vice President. At a later date, both the office of Provost and that of Vice President for Student Affairs were reinstated. During the period covered by these records, Pete D. Gardner (1973-1977), Cedric Davern (1977-1983), Irwin Altman (1983-1986), Joseph L. Taylor (1987-1990), and Jerilyn S. McIntyre (1990-1997) served as Vice President for Academic Affairs.
