Biographical Note

Howard Lee Nostrand (1910-2004) taught in the Department of Romance Languages, and was chair of the department at University of Washington. Nostrand also served as cultural attache in Lima, Peru, 1944-1947. He was involved in a court case, Nostrand vs. Balmer, 1959, challenging loyalty oaths then required of University of Washington faculty. His professional associations included American Association of Teachers of French, American Civil Liberties Union of Washington, Modern Language Association of America, National Commission on Teacher Education and Professional Standards, National Education Association, Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Content Description

Correspondence, minutes, teaching materials, newsletters, and other papers, relating to Nostrand's teaching and research and to his work as cultural attaché in Lima, Peru (1944-1947). Includes papers he retained relating to student protests (1965-1975), papers documenting his involvement in the court case (Nostrand vs. Balmer, 1959) challenging loyalty oaths then required of University of Washington faculty, and papers relating to American Association of Teachers of French, American Civil Liberties Union of Washington, Modern Language Association of America, National Commission on Teacher Education and Professional Standards, National Education Association, and Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
