Historical Note

Mu Phi Epsilon was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1903. Professor Winthrop S. Sterling, dean of the Metropolitan College of Music, believed that women should have the same opportunities as the men participating in the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity, and so founded a female sorority. The Washington State University chapter, Mu Beta, was founded Feb. 13, 1919, and is still active in 2025. The Pullman Alumni chapter was founded on March 1, 1966, but moved to inactive status in 1997.

Content Description

This collection contains handbooks, newsletters, and planning materials for the Pullman Alumni Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon at WSU. Given their involvement and support of the Mu Beta (Washington State University) student chapter, many records from that group are included as well. Insight into the events of the organizations are described via event flyers and newsletters. Pamphlets describe who was involved in the Pullman alumni chapter on a year-by-year basis.

The first series is materials specifically tied to the Pullman alumni chapter. The second series is materials primarily tied to the Mu Beta student chapter, though it often overlaps with the alumni group
