Historical Note

The Oregon Council of Teachers of English (OCTE) is an organization of Oregon English and literature educators who teach at levels from elementary school to university. It was founded in 1913 in Salem, Oregon, and was one of the earliest state affiliates of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). In 1988, the council began the Oregon Literature Series, a project to release a six-volume anthology of Oregon literature published by Oregon State University Press. Since 1979, OCTE has published the semi-annual publication Oregon English Journal.

Content Description

The collection consists of the records and publications of the Oregon Council of Teachers of English. General administrative records include meeting minutes and agendas; programs, schedules, correspondence, and other materials relating to conferences and workshops; correspondence; constitutions; board rosters; surveys; goals; and reports, recommendations, and statements. A significant portion of the collection relates to the Oregon Literature Series project, including correspondence and papers of individuals involved with the project, as well as proposals, contracts, and reviews of works published under the project's auspices. Publications in the collection include Teachers as Writers, a publication for members' creative writings; issues of the council's newsletter, Chalkboard, and issues of the council's semi-annual publication, Oregon English Journal. Other materials in the collection include literary maps of Oregon, and resolutions and statements of the National Council of Teachers of English.
