Biographical Note

Daniel S. Lev was a scholar of Indonesia and a professor of political science at the University of Washington. He wrote several seminal books and articles on Indonesian courts and politics, and worked alongside lawyers, scholars and dissidents to improve a dysfunctional legal system during the Suharto regime.

Lev was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1933, and was a Golden Gloves boxer as a teen. He graduated from Ohio's Miami University in 1955, married his wife Arlene, and began his doctoral studies at Cornell University. In 1957 he joined the Modern Indonesia Project at Cornell University (CMIP) under the leadership of George McTurnan Kahin. In order to study Indonesian politics, Lev lived in Indonesia under a Ford Foundation scholarship 1958-1961. His dissertation was titled "The Transition to Guided Democracy: Indonesian Politics 1957–1959" and analyzed Sukarno's Guided Democracy principles.

After moving back to the United States, Professor Lev taught at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1970 Lev joined the faculty at the University of Washington where he taught until his retirement in 1999. Lev also served as a longtime member of Human Rights Watch's Asia division advisory committee. At the time of his death, Lev was writing a biography of Chinese Indonesian lawyer and human rights advocate Yap Thiam Hien. The work was completed by his fellow scholar and friend Benedict Anderson and was published in 2011 as "No Concessions: The Life of Yap Thiam Hien, Indonesian Human Rights Lawyer" by the University of Washington Press.

Daniel Lev died on July 29, 2006 at the age of 72.
