Historical Note

The Shepard Book Company, operating at the turn of the twentieth-century, was organized by Richard B. Shepard, a man who was a member of both the Kansas and Utah Legislatures. Shepard Book Company published numerous noteworthy books including Through the Heart of the Scenic West by J. Cecil Alter, and The Rocky Mountain Saints by T. B. H. Stenhouse. Shepard was thrown into the national spotlight when he was sentenced to serve thirteen months in prison for sending catalogues through the mail offering material deemed "immoral."
