Historical Note

The Standard Oil Company of Indiana was established in 1889, and its refinery officially began operating in Whiting, Indiana in 1890. Shortly thereafter, the Whiting plant became the largest refinery in the United States. After the break-up of the Standard Oil giant in 1911, Standard Indiana operated as an independent company and became the third largest refinery in America. Eventually, the company merged with the American Oil Co. in the 1950s and soon ranked second nationally in gasoline refinery.
