Biographical Note

Jim Stoltz, or Walkin' Jim, was a singer, songwriter, author, and long-distance hiker. Born in Michigan, he took his first long distance hike along the Appalachian Trail in 1973. From 1975 to 1976, he hiked from Maine to Washington, a trip that garnered attention from local media outlets along his route. Throughout the rest of his life, Stoltz hiked approximately 27,000 miles throughout the North American wilderness, including the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Yellowstone to Yukon Trail. As his notebooks indicate, Stoltz's music flowed freely from his time on foot, as lyrics written in the wilderness echoed through his various productions.

In addition to incorporating wilderness themes into his publicly released albums, Jim Stoltz founded, with his wife Leslie, Wild Wind Music. He also joined with Joyce Rouse and Craig Wagner to establish Musicians United to Sustain the Environment (M.U.S.E.) and published a collection of wilderness writings, Walking with the Wild Wind (2003). When not hiking, Stoltz travelled to schools, community centers, and other locations throughout the United States to perform his songs and discuss wilderness issues. After a long battle with cancer, Jim Stoltz died in 2010 in Helena, Montana, at the age of 57. A Kid for the Wild scholarship was created as a tribute to his life, work, and philosophical vision.
