Historical Note

Prior to 1968, there existed several small departments divided mostly along the lines of plants, animals, and sub-organisms with special departments for the disciplines of cytology and genetics. All of these small departments were unified in 1968 forming the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Environmental Science. In 1969, these two separate departments were fused into one Department of Biology. Currently the Biology Department is divided into the three divisions of Cell and Molecular Biology; Ecological and Evolutionary Biology; and Physiology, Genetics, and Developmental Biology. Each division is responsible for the content and makeup of their own separate curriculums.
