Biographical Note

Hildegarde Hopkins (Lupprian) was born October 25, 1896 in Richmond, Staten Island, New York to Charles (Carl) Albert Lupprian and Louisa (Lulu) Marscher. She was an illustrator of children’s books, including The Little Dog Who Forgot How to Bark (1946), The Little Puppy Who Would Not Mind His Mother (1949), and, notably, Nancy and Plum (1952) by the famed Washington author Betty MacDonald (1907-1958).

Hildegarde was married twice, first to Charles A. Beck in 1933 (divorced 1942 in Mexico) and then to Stephen D. Hopkins in 1942. After an accident in 1956, she took up heraldry illustration. She died June 27, 1983 in Seattle, Washington and is buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
