Historical Note

Nancy Lynn Schwartz (1952-1978) was a television writer and author best known for her work The Hollywood Writers’ Wars. She wrote episodes for the 1978 television mini-series “Wheels” and co-wrote the TV movie “Like Mom, Like Me” with her mother, Sheila Schwartz. Her posthumously released TV movie “Charleston” premiered in 1979, for which she had developed the pilot and storyline for thirteen episodes. Schwartz served as chairwoman of the Women’s Committee of the Writers Guild of America and was the youngest candidate for the Guild’s Board of Directors at the time. She began writing The Hollywood Writers’ Wars, a history of the Screen Writers’ Guild and the Hollywood blacklists, prior to her death. The work was completed by her mother and published in 1982 following her death in 1978 at the age of twenty-six.

This collection contains personal and professional papers related to Nancy Schwartz. Included in her personal papers are artifacts, correspondence, photographs and biographical information about her life. Her professional papers contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, manuscript materials, and the work for her book The Hollywood Writers’ Wars compiled by both her and her mother, Sheila Schwartz. The book files include research, interviews, copies of the book, and drafts completed by both Sheila and Nancy.
