Biographical Note

Lucy Alice Ide crossed the Plains in 1878 with her husband Chester D. Ide and settled near Dayton in southeastern Washington Territory. The wagon train consisted of forty-one individuals, mainly members of the Gifford, Ide, Christian, Hunter, and Eager families. They left Mondovi, WI on 1 May 1878, bound for Washington Territory, traveling slow along the Oregon Trail. They encountered many of the same hardships earlier emigrants had faced – the threat of hostile Indians, illness, adverse weather, and morale problems. However, the country was more settled than it had been in the 1850s, and the party had little difficulty in obtaining food and other necessary supplies. On 13 September, after four months and thirteen days on the trail, they arrived at Dayton.
