Historical Note

The University of Washington first established a social casework course in the Department of Sociology with the help of the Red Cross in 1918. Over the following 15 years, the program expanded to become a division of the Dept. of Sociology offering a full range of social work courses. In 1934, the UW established the graduate-level School of Social Work with funding from the Washington State Emergency Relief Association and with Arlien Johnson as the director. Ernest Witte was appointed director in 1939, followed by Acting Director Grace Beals Ferguson during the 1940s. Victor Howery became director in 1951, in 1955 the School moved into Social Work Hall, and in 1958 the School was designated as an independent professional school and Howery became its first dean. The undergraduate program of the School of Social Work was established in 1959. Charles Brink became dean in 1963, followed by J. Scott Briar in 1971. The bachelor's in social welfare program was accredited in 1974, and a doctoral program was added in 1975. Nancy Hooyman became dean in 1987, followed by Dorothy Van Soest in 2002 and then Edwina Uehara in 2006.
