Historical NoteReturn to Top
Kathryn Hain (b. 1957) was born in Nebraska. She earned her B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska; M.A. in Middle Eastern Cultures and Religions from Jerusalem University College; and Ph.D. in Middle East history from the University of Utah. She married Raymond Hain in 1981; the couple had three children. The family lived in Amman, Jordan and Jerusalem from 1996-2009. During the family's time in the Middle East, Hain and her husband, were employed by the Church of School Services, Inc. where they provided Christian literature for churches and schools. Hain was an adjunct professor at the University of Utah from 2013-2015 and assistant professor at Bushnell University from 2017-2018.
The Church School Service, Inc. (CSS) was founded in 1975. CSS was a Christian organization ministering in the Middle East. The organization also published and distributed Christian Arabic literature.

The Kathryn Hain papers (1990-2017) consist of personal and professional material related to Kathryn Hain (b. 1957), who earned a Ph.D. from the University of Utah in the Department of Humanities, College of History. The collection is arranged in two series. The first series consists mostly of material related the Hain's family time in Amman, Jordan and Jerusalem. Included are correspondence and ephemera to and from CSS directors, family, and friends. The second series consists of general material related to Hain's Ph.D. candidacy and experience at the University of Utah. The bulk of the series consists of essays from Hain and other writers related to feminine enslavement and social mobility under Islam. Also included is Hain's dissertation entitled "The Slave Trade of European Women to the Middle East and Asia," 2016.
