Historical Note

The Historic American Buildings Survey began as a New Deal program in 1933 during the Great Depression. The program was operated by the National Park service and employed photographers and architects to document the nation's architectural history. It received funding from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and additional support from the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

This collection includes photographs of historic homes, churches, forts and other buildings across Washington State. Photographs of architectural drawings, paintings and sketches of certain locales are also included.

Originally part of Seattle Public Library Art Department's Northwest Photograph Collection. Removed in 2018 to create a separate collection.
