Historical Note

Edward N. Wentworth (1887-1959) was born in Dover, New Hampshire, and earned an M.S. degree from Iowa State College in 1909 in animal husbandry. He was a professor at Iowa State College and Kansas State College before serving as a captain in the U.S. Army Field Artillery in World War I. He remained in the reserve until 1950, gaining the rank of colonel. He joined the meat packing firm of Armour and Company in 1919 and was director of its livestock bureau in Chicago from 1923 to 1954. In 1954 he retired to his home, Red Oak Ridge, near Chesterton in Porter County, Indiana, where he lived with his wife, Alma, and collected western art and books. Wentworth was the author of several works on the history of the American cattle, sheep, and pork industries, including America’s Sheep Trails (1948), Pigs: From Cave to Cornbelt (1950), and Cattle and Men (1955).

Content Description

The papers include manuscripts of America’s Sheep Trails and of several shorter works on sheep, cattle, and other topics, including an unpublished work titled Horses, Saddles, and Wheels. There is a substantial amount of research material, including correspondence, covering the history of sheep, cattle, and horses in America. Among other items, there is the transcript of a journal kept by Gorham Gates Kimball, along with photographs, research material, and maps, which Wentworth used to edit and publish the journal as Trailing Sheep from California to Idaho in 1865. Also included are publications of some of the shorter works and reviews of several books. Wentworth’s career with Armour and Company is reflected in photographs taken during the Livestock and Meat Industry Tours sponsored by the company from 1948 to 1950, when guests were invited to visit farms and ranches in many areas of the country to observe methods of livestock raising and processing. Artwork reflecting cattle and sheep raising is also a part of the collection.

Acquisition Information

Acquisition Information

The Edward N. Wentworth papers were received from Edward N. Wentworth between 1948 and 1957. Additional material was received from Marie Aebischer in 1964 and 1968. Material was also received from Kenneth E. Miller in 1966 and from Edith T. Wentworth and Norris Wentworth in 1968. There was little discernible order in the papers as received.

Processing Note

Processing Information

The collection was processed by D.C. Thompson in August 2002. The materials have been organized as seemed most useful for research. However, researchers should bear in mind that the processors have used their best judgments in placing materials together and that the results may not reflect Wentworth’s use of the material. Some newsprint has been copied and the originals discarded due to fragility.
