Historical Note

The office of Vice President for Academic Affairs was created in 1973 as part of a major reorganization of the University of Utah central administration. The office assumed the duties of three former positions: Provost, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Academic Vice President. At a later date, both the office of Provost and that of Vice President for Student Affairs were reinstated. During the period covered by these records, Pete D. Gardner (1973-1977), Cedric Davern (1977-1983), and Irwin Altman (1983-1986) served as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Content Description

This collection contains financial audits and budgets, correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, reports, and other materials primarily from the files of Vice Presidents for Academic Affairs Pete Gardner, Cedric Davern, and Irwin Altman. The collection also includes eight linear feet of records generated by various ad hoc and standing faculty committees formed by the Council of Academic Deans and the Academic Senate. Also included are minutes of staff meetings of university presidents Olpin and Fletcher.
