Historical NoteReturn to Top
The National Cherry Blossom Festival is an event to celebrate relationships between the United States and Japan, centered around cherry trees gifted from Japan to the United States. In 1912, Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki gifted 3,020 cherry trees to the United States government as a diplomatic gesture. The trees were planted along the Tidal Basin in what is now West Potomac National Park. The first Cherry Blossom Festival was held in 1934; the next year, it became a national event and in 1940, a Cherry Blossom Pageant was added. During World War II, the festival was not held; it resumed in 1948, and this year marked the beginning of the practice of picking Cherry Blossom Princesses from U.S. States and territories, one of whom is chosen to be Cherry Blossom Queen.
The Cherry Blossom Queen is given a pearl necklace and free trip to Japan to tour and meet with Japanese dignitaries. While Princesses are selected based on their histories of leadership and volunteer work, Queens are randomly selected. This collection, which contains black and white headshots of Utah Princesses and color photographs of 1992 Utah Cherry Blossom Queen Ann Higgenbotham, was donated by Gregoria Korologos, who in her role as office manager for Senator Jake Garn selected Utah's Cherry Blossom Princesses.
