Troma Entertainment, Inc. is an American independent film production and distribution company, founded in 1974 by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. In the 1970s, Kaufman and Herz produced raunchy sex comedies including “The First Turn-On!” and “Squeeze Play.” In 1985, the company produced the film “The Toxic Avenger” which became Troma’s most popular film and the official mascot of Troma Entertainment. Troma was known for its horror B-movie productions which contained elements of farce, parody, gore and splatter. Their films have been categorized as "shock exploitation films" because they typically contain overt sexuality, nudity, and intentionally sadistic, gory, and blatant graphic violence. Troma film has become a term synonymous with these characteristics. They have produced, acquired and distributed over 1,000 independent films since its creation.
