Historical Note

Washington State University was founded as the Washington Agricultural College and School of Science in 1890, though it was known as Washington State College for most of the period covered by the papers in this collection. During World War II, the campus both continued providing college educations but also served as a military training facility for the United States' Armed Forces. The Office of the Registrar is responsible for handling student records; the role of the registrar dates to the earliest days of the campus, though the first registrar also served a secretarial role. Today it's responsible for virtually all non-medical student data.

Content Description

The collection contains both summary reports generated by the Office of the Registrar at Washington State College, as well as records held there. This is one of the few places that any sort of comprehensive year-by-year data can be found predating the computer era. In addition to one overall summary data volume dealing with multiple subjects, the collections contains reports on admissions, enrollment, advanced standing, registration, and summer school, with data often broken down by sex, origin of the student, student standing in school, veteran status, and school or origin (for transfer students).

The collection also holds numerous papers relating to courses taught on campus during the World War II years, both through WSC and through the military. They appear to have primarily been retained to aid the Registrar in later assigning transfer credits. Information on early distance education ("Correspondence Courses") can be found here as well.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in several informal series and subseries, organized by subject matter. Series 1, in box 1 contains papers once held in the Registrar's Office, dealing with World War II education, distance education, and then a few single folders dealing with other topics. Series 2, in boxes 2 to 4, contains statistical reports and data from that office, broken down by subject matter and then by date within that.

Acquisition Information

The materials in this collection, along with a variety of student grade books and some Regents Minutes, were given to MASC by Dave Guzman of the Washington State University Registrar's Office on June 17, 1996, and retained as accession UA1996-12. In July 2015 they were separated from the other materials and processed.

Processing Note
