Historical Note

W. G. Dewey opened his lumber yard in Polson, Montana, in 1910, the same year that the city was founded. L. L. Marsh was the first manager of the company. Mr. Dewey also operated a large sawmill at Rollins, Montana, from which he hauled lumber across the lake to meet the needs of homesteaders on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The Dewey Lumber Company mill operated until 1943 when it was sold to the Polson Lumber Company. The retail operation closed in the early 1970s.

Content Description

The Dewey Lumber Company collection contains journals, cash books and ledgers, 1916-1938; inventory records, 1927-1941; payroll records, 1919-1941; and a general ledger for the Company's Missoula yard, 1939-1941. Financial records for the Dewey Service Company, which sold motor vehicles and operated a service station in Polson, are included for 1934-1939.

Gift of Dewey Lumber Co., 1971.

Processing Note

The actions of the original processors are unknown; the collection was originally numbered LC 69. In 2000, the collection was reprocessed and re-numbered Mss 069. In 2004, the finding aid was encoded.
