Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The front of this single folded sheet shows the side profile of an unidentified woman who is at least partially unclothed. Inside the text reads: "Don't be a humbug. The North Face invites you to a Pre-Xmas Stag Party. Let us help you select a little something for your best girl, wife...or both. Super girls, Super sounds, Super wine, Super cheese. Dec. 5, 7:00-11:00, 308 Columbus Ave. store. Bring a friend."
Historical NoteReturn to Top
Most people are familiar with The North Face as one of the biggest suppliers of outdoor equipment and clothing, but few realize just how different the company was in its infancy. Doug and Suzie Tompkins started the company as a mail order business in 1966, and in October of that same year, held a legendary grand opening party at their new storefront at 308 Columbus Avenue in San Francisco. The Grateful Dead played a set in front of a large Ansel Adams print, the Hells Angels worked the door, and Joan Baez wandered the crowd. This "cheeky" invitation is from a later party, likely in 1967, before Tompkins sold the business to Kenneth "Hap" Klopp, who moved the business to Berkeley and guided it into The North Face that we know today.
