Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority (PDA) is a not-for-profit, public corporation chartered by the City of Seattle in 1973 to manage properties in the nine-acre Market Historic District. The Pike Place Market PDA is responsible for preserving, rehabilitating and protecting the Market's buildings; increasing farm and food retail opportunities in the Market; supporting small and marginal businesses; and providing services for low-income people. PDA activities are governed by a 12-member Council. Of the 12 members, four are appointed by the Mayor, four are elected by the Pike Place Market Constituency, and four are appointed by the PDA Council. All Council members must be confirmed by the Seattle City Council and typically serve a four year term. The Executive Director of the PDA is appointed by the PDA Council to carry out its policies and direct the staff of the PDA.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
From 2009 to 2012, Pike Place Market underwent a major renovation, funded in large part by a 6-year, $73 million property tax levy approved by Seattle voters in 2008. The project encompassed the market's historic buildings, the hillclimb, and the parking garage. Improvements included modernization of electrical and mechanical systems, new restrooms and elevators, structural and seismic upgrades, and major maintenance. This series contains monthly progress reports noting the current status of the project in terms of design and construction, financing, and communications, along with budget information.
