Historical Note

Sidford F. Hamp was born in Liverpool, England, March 10, 1855. At the age of seventeen he went to the United States and obtained a place with the Hayden Geological Survey through the influence of his uncle, William Blackmore. Hamp traveled with the 1872 expedition for six months, visiting the area which would become Yellowstone National Park, before returning to England. Blackmore and his wife also accompanied the expedition. In 1877, Hamp's mother and four siblings moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for health reasons, where Sidford F. Hamp later joined them. He married Josephine Cable on November 11, 1899. Hamp authored a number of books for the youth market, short stories, plays, and opera librettos, many set in Colorado. He died September 3, 1919.

Content Description

The Sidford F. Hamp papers focus on his travels at the age of seventeen with the Hayden Geological Survey which he accompanied as a member of Stevenson's division in the capacity of assistant topographer. Hamp kept a diary and wrote letters back to his mother from May, 1872 when he left England, until November, 1872, when he returned. Hamp later emigrated to the United States and settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the second part of the collection deals with the novels and other works of fiction which he created during this time, many of them set in Colorado. The collection also contains a small amount of biographical material and photographs of Sidford F. Hamp and William Blackmore. Also included are photographs taken by William Henry Jackson during the Hayden Expedition.>
