Historical Note
The cathedral congregation of St. John the Evangelist was formed in 1929 by the merger of the congregation of All Saints' Cathedral and of the St. Peter's and St. James' mission congregations. Ground breaking for the Cathedral was held in 1925, and construction of the gothic edifice continued at irregular intervals until 1954, when the transepts and crossing tower were completed.
Content Description
The collection consists of the surviving fragmentary historical record of the congregation and its antecedent congregations. Included are minute books of the St. James congregation, 1909-1929; minute books of the All Saints Cathedral, 1894-1929; and correspondence, bills, receipts, drawings, photographs, and ephemeral items relating to the design evolution and construction progress of the St. Johns Cathedral, 1929-1965. Also included are biographical sketches of the Chapter’s clergy, a fragmentary collection of Cathedral Chimes , and scrapbooks relating to activities of clergy, the various guilds and women’s groups, polemical religious tracts and brochures.
