Historical NoteReturn to Top

Through the Agricultural Experiment Stations Act of 1887, the federal government supplied each new state with funds towards establishing and maintaining agricultural experiment stations under direction of the land-grant universities, and this became part of the function of Washington State University when initially authorized by the state in 1889 and 1890. The role of the Experiment Stations is to conduct research towards the improvement of crops, and the crop-growing industry.

Among the WSU Experiment Stations is the Tree Fruit Branch Experiment Station, located outside Wenatchee. It was established in 1937 by the state legislature, and is just one several such Extension Stations in the state.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of several series of Experiment Station publications, dating from 1891 (before WSU offered its first classes) up through 1966. The Bulletins and Reports tend to be full research papers, offering intensive details into the methodology, results, and usefulness of Experiment Station research. The Circulars and Newspaper Bulletins tend to be of more practical nature, offering immediate resources intending to aid in day-today agriculture, or to provide outreach and information on the works of the Stations.

It should be noted that many items are published without dates. As the copies in this collection were collected by various libraries, many have library date stamps on them, but those are not the date of publication.

Alternative Forms Available

The individual items in this collection (as well as others in these series and others) should all be individually cataloged and available on line in the WSU institutional repository, Research Exchange. They can also be found through the library catalog, SearchIt.

Additionally, some issues, digitized elsewhere, can often be found online via Google Books or similar tools.

Restrictions on Use

Copyright has not been individually evaluated; anything published with a copyright notice and having the copyright subsequently renewed remains in copyright until 95 years after publication; otherwise materials are likely in the public domain.

Arrangement

The series in the collection are arranged alphabetically. Within each series, materials are arranged by item or volume numbers, which are loosely chronological. An exception is the Bulletins, in which most, though not all, of the Director’s Annual Reports were broken out separately and place at the end of the series. As many of the publications are later updated and republished, those revised editions will appear out of chronological order.

Acquisition Information

In 2021, WSU’s Owen Science and Engineering Library removed duplicate copies of WSU Extension and WSU Experiment Station publications, and transferred these materials to the WSU Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC). Under a CERES grant, MASC students digitized all the materials which had not been previously digitized, placed them online, and the materials were archived.

Processing Note

University Archivist Mark O’English and student Jean Baker processed the physical materials in 2023, after preliminary work by Anne-Marie Greggs.

Separated Materials

The materials originating with the Agricultural Extension Service were processed separately as Archives 411.

Related Materials

WSU MASC retains parallel and overlapping sets of these series in their WSU Publications collection. Specific items not present here may well be present there. In theory individual items can also be found in the WSU Library stacks proper.
