Historical Note
The Mirage Bowl was a regular season NCAA football game held in Tokyo, Japan from 1977 to 1993 in the National Olympic Stadium in front of 60,000 fans. On November 17, 1984, the University of Montana played Army. Army won 45-31. 450 Montanans made the trip including the team and its entourage. United States Ambassador to Japan, Mike Mansfield, was also in attendance. The official Montana contingent consisted of 155 members including Lieutenant Governor George Turman, Big Sky Conference Commissioner Ron Stephens, University of Montana President Neil Bucklew, Vice Presidents W. Michael Easton, Donald Habbe and Glenn Williams; Athletic Director Harley Lewis, Head Coach Larry Donovan, his staff and team support personnel.
Content Description
This collection consists of 118 color 35mm slides showing the Mirage Bowl football game between the University of Montana and Army at the National Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. Other images include sites in and around Tokyo including Buddhist temples, the Imperial Palace and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Mike Mansfield. The images were taken between November 13 and 17, 1984.
