Historical Note

Frank S. Burrage was a philanthropist associated with Laramie, Wyoming, born in 1859 in Massachusetts. Beginning as a messenger for the Western Union Telegraph Company in his youth, Burrage went on to attend Harvard University and pass the Massachusetts bar in 1884. In his early law career, Burrage represented the Brookline Gas Light Company, becoming lead counsel in the battle over Boston’s gasoline market. Emerging victorious, Burrage reaped the financial benefits, and his wealth only grew from there. In addition to his legal pursuits, Burrage was also a philanthropist. His endeavors in this area eventually brought him to Laramie, Wyoming where he may have also had family ties or personal acquaintances. Burrage’s influence on Laramie likely had an effect on the town’s overall development.
