Biographical Note

Edward Alexander (1936-2020) was born in Brooklyn, NY and attended Hebrew school on 500 Herzl St. in Brownsville. He earned an B.A from Columbia College in 1957, a M.A (1959) and a Ph.D. (1963) from the University of Minnesota.

He served as an instructor in English at the University of Washington from 1960-1964, was promoted to assistant professor in 1964, associate professor in 1967, and full professor in 1969. He served as the first chairman of UW's Jewish Studies Program. He was a visiting professor at Tufts, Hebrew University, Tel-Aviv University, and Memphis State University. He retired in 2004.

Alexander was a member of the Association of Literary Scholars, Critics, and Writers, the National Association of Scholars, and the Washington Association of Scholars. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1974 in the field of "Literary Criticism".

He authored numerous books and articles on Victorian literature and a variety of Jewish subjects, including The Jewish Idea and Its Enemies (1988) and Jews against Themselves (2015).
