Biographical Note

Kentro (1888-1970) and Shige (1889-1980) Nodzu were both born in Japan. Kentro first came to the United States in 1906. He returned to Japan in 1923 to marry Shige. They both returned to the United States, arriving in Seattle, Washington on June 30, 1924. They traveled on to Carbon County, Utah where Kentro worked mining coal. Kentro worked for the Spring Canyon Coal Company as a loader for 17 years when World War II began. Soon after the bombing of Peal Harbor and the declaration of war, Kentro and other Japanese miners were all laid off. In 1942, the Nodzu family moved to American Fork, Utah were Kentro leased a few acres of farming land. Later the family moved to Orem, Utah to cultivate his own land. Both Kentro and Shige became United States citizens on July 29, 1955. They has 8 children: Masaka Martha Nodzu Okawa, Kiyoshi Kenneth Nodzu, Sumie May Nodzu Akiyama, Midori Gay Nodzu Higashi, Yoshiko Nodzu Guzman, Yayoi Nodzu Misaka, Tomio Thomas Nodzu, and Reiko Nodzu Watanabe.
