Biographical Note

Clark Bainbridge wrote his history PhD dissertation on "The origins of Rosalie Edge's Emergency Conservation Committee, 1930-1962 : a historical analysis," (University of Idaho, 2002). A copy of this dissertation is in the Carsten Lien papers (Acc. # 5527-001).

Rosalie Edge (1877-1962) was active in the women's suffrage movement and in environmental causes. After learning about the corruption of the directors of the National Association of Audubon Societies--including their collusion with commercial wildlife harvesters--Edge created the Emergency Conservation Committee (ECC) to reform the Audubon Association. As part of her work for the ECC, of which she was chairman for thirty years, she campaigned to preserve 8000 acres of sugar pines on the southern edge of Yosemite National Park, campaigned for the creation of Olympic and Kings Canyon National Parks, and created a wildlife sanctuary at Hawk Mountain in eastern Pennsylvania.

Irving Brant (1885-1976) was an author, historian, and newspaper editor who served as the Treasurer of the Emergency Conservation Committee from 1930 to 1962.
