Historical Note

Martin Tyra Baskett was a sheep rancher near Shoshoni, Wyoming. He was born October 6, 1882 in Lexington, Kentucky, and died in April, 1965 in Casper, Wyoming. He was General Manager of Baskett Bros. & Lamb Wool Growers in the teens and 1920s, which later became just Baskett Brothers Wool Growers. In the late 1920s he advertised himself as a commission dealer in sheep, then again as a wool grower in the late 1930s through the 1950s. In 1960 he became a real estate broker, dealing in sheep, ranches, and range lands. He was chairman of the Wyoming Live Stock and Sanitary Board, as well as a member of the Board of Sheep Commissioners, the Wyoming State Soil Conservation Committee, the Natrona County Welfare Board, the Kalif Temple in Sheridan, and on the board of directors of the Wyoming Taxpayers Association.

Content Description

The Martin T. Baskett papers contain personal files, photographs, and business records relating to his career as a sheep rancher near Shoshoni, Wyoming. Correspondence (Series I) is arranged chronologically and contains business and personal letters, telegrams, and greeting cards. Date Books (Series II) are daily entry diaries documenting Baskett’s life from 1933 to 1960. Financial Records (Series III) are arranged chronologically and contain ledgers listing personal and business expenses, stock information, loan applications, income taxes, financial statements, accountant’s reports, and monthly lists of disbursements and receipts, both personal and business related.

Land and Real Estate Records (Series IV) are arranged chronologically and include homestead entries, deeds, mining claims, grazing leases, yearly property taxes, real estate transactions, contracts and agreements, and information on the issue of public domain land and federal taxation. Personal Files (Series V) are arranged alphabetically and contain some information on Baskett family members, papers presented to the Casper Literary Club, eulogies written for friends and business associates, newspaper clippings, ephemera, WWII ration books, and documents related to his service to the Natrona County Welfare Board and Wyoming Taxpayers Association.

Photographs (Series VI) are arranged alphabetically and include pictures of Baskett, family members, sheep, sheep wagons, and sheep operations. Sheep Records (Series VII) are arranged chronologically and contain contracts and agreements, sales and delivery information, weight and tally records, figures on yearly wool clips, lists of Wyoming sheep owners, Wyoming Brand Books, health certificates and other documents related to the Wyoming Live Stock and Sanitary Board, and a record of minutes from the Shoshoni Shearing Company. There are also files regarding legislation on the proposed Livestock Trespass Law and Fence Act. Oversized Documents and Artifacts (Series VIII) contain certificates, maps and plats, a set of tax study charts prepared by the Casper Chamber of Commerce Taxation Committee, and a paint branding iron.
