Historical Note

Founded in 1879 as Struve and Leary, the firm was Struve, Allen, Hughes & McMicken from 1892 to 1903. When the partnership dissolved in late 1989, it was known as Schweppe, Krug, and Tausend. Many of the firm's clients were involved in industries essential to the area's economic growth. Some of the earliest firm correspondence concerns homestead and donation land claims upon which lumber and mining companies were established. Among its major clients were the Puget Mill Company (later Pope and Talbot), Port Blakely Mill Company, Northern Pacific Railway Company, Seattle Electric Company, and The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Content Description

The records best document the law practice of Struve, Allen, McMicken, & Hughes and several later partners. In addition to the general firm records, the partners' correspondence deals with legal matters and reflects their personal involvement with clients as well as their own business and political interests. The bulk of collection consists of early records which survived the Seattle fire of 1889, and correspondence and case files from 1889 through 1920. Records from 1920 through the 1940s are also present, but are not as complete as those of the earlier period.
