Historical Note
The first meeting of the Missoula Bird Club was held on July 24, 1917, at The University of Montana Biological Station at Yellow Bay, Flathead Lake. Among the club’s founding members were Professor Morton J. Elrod, the director of the Biological Station, and his family. Many of the club’s members were affiliated with The University of Montana and meetings were sometimes held on the Missoula campus. One of the club’s first projects was a study of the birds of Greenough Park. The group participated in national bird studies and other bird-watching activities, and campaigned on behalf of conservation issues.
The Missoula Bird Club changed it name to the Missoula Audubon Society after its national affiliation, on October 12, 1929.
