Historical Note
The Olds Ferry, established by Reuben P. Olds, ran between Weiser, Idaho, and Huntington, Oregon, from 1863 until 1920, when it was sold and moved down the river to Brownlee.
Seining was a method of fishing with nets, long used by the Native American communities in the Pacific Northwest and eventually adopted by the settlers in the 1800s. This type of fishing was a particularly effective tool for catching schools of fish, such as salmon. Seining was widely used on the Columbia River until 1948, when it was outlawed in Oregon.
Content Description
Three black and white photoprints, dating from approximately 1890 through 1916, of unrelated river scenes in the Pacific Northwest, including Olds Ferry on the Snake River, Native American net fishing, and seining for salmon on the Columbia River. Photographers noted are Walter Meacham and Benjamin A. Gifford.
