Historical Note

Henry Swan (1818-1904) was an older brother of Alexander Swan (1831-1905) who organized with another older brother, Thomas, the Swan Brothers cattle company in 1874. Henry Swan and his son William Franklin Swan (1848-1932) were partners in Swan Brothers until 1880. Alexander Swan later organized the Swan Land and Cattle Company in 1883 near Chugwater, Wyoming.

Content Description

The collection contains photographs of prominent Wyoming rancher and Wyoming Stock Grower Association Secretary Thomas Sturgis, the Home Ranch, the Bell Ranch, Hat Creek telegraph station, and signatures presented as a testimonial in 1884 to Thomas Sturgis. There are pamphlets regarding western history and a book, Cowboy Life on the Side Track, by Frank Benton, and a typescript biography of Thomas Sturgis up to 1880. The collection also contains editions of the Laramie Republican newspaper (1901, 1905), a braided horsehair hat band said to have belonged to Calamity Jane, a framed portrait of Alexander Swan by Miss E.N. Fairchild, and correspondence (1953-1969) between Henry Swan II and administrators of the Western History Research Center (now American Heritage Center) regarding the collection. The materials pertaining to Thomas Sturgis were given to Henry Swan by Sturgis’ daughter.
