Historical Note
Richard Hamilton Scott was the son of Charles and Margaret Scott. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1880 and served with the U.S. Navy in 1881. He moved to Wyoming in 1886 and served as a state district judge from 1890 to 1906. He presided over the divorce of William and Louisa Cody in 1905, and he served on the Wyoming Supreme Court from 1906 to 1917. While in Wyoming, he was also a Freemason.
Content Description
Collection contains correspondence regarding family affairs, as well as correspondence between Scott and Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft, and John Kendrick. It also contains materials relating to Scott's service in the U.S. Navy and as a cadet at the U.S. Naval Academy. There are also photographs of Scott, an invitation to the wedding of Helen Frances Warren and John Pershing, and Masonic documents.

Description: Correspondence
Mostly incoming correspondence to Scott. Includes a short note from President Theodore Roosevelt, a letter from Willis Van Devanter in response to Scott’s letter congratulating him on his nomination to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, a letter from William Howard Taft, a letter from Buffalo Bill Cody and Cody’s signature with note from Major John Talbot, and an invitation to Scott to attend a meeting of the League to Enforce Peace. Also includes some outgoing correspondence and recommendation letters.

- (1) "Resolutions of Condolence," following Scott’s death, from his Masonic lodge;
- (2) a resolution regarding Scott’s death from members of the Bar of Uinta County, Wyoming;
- (3) a tribute to Scott, following his death, from the Laramie County Bar Association;
- (4) a certificate appointing Scott as a notary public in Minnesota;
- (5) an invitation to a Masonic biennial session;
- (6) three documents from the Navy;
- (7) a letter of commendation regarding Scott’s duties on the U.S.S. Alliance;
- (8) letters from Navy Secretary William H. Hunt ordering Scott to explain his reasons for resigning from the Navy and accepting his resignation; and
- (9) an invitation to the dedication of the buildings of the 1892 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
