Historical Note

WSU News is the central news office for Washington State University. The roots of the department date to 1907, when students with newspaper experience began sending news to northwest press on a volunteer basis. This informal start evolved into the Office of Publication, and in 1946 the College News Bureau was split off from that. Circa 1985 it became News and Information Services. Circa 2012, the Washington State University News Service and WSU Today merged to become WSU News.

Content Description

This collection consists of 19 boxes of Washington State University images taken by staff members in WSU’s News and Information Services. The department was responsible for providing WSU stories for the media and for in-house publications such as WSU Week, Hilltopics, and Universe. Many of the photographs were also used in student publications such as the Chinook or the Evergreen.

There are several different formats in this collection, which includes three boxes of contact sheets, seven boxes of print photographs that are either loose or taped onto paper, eight boxes of slides, and one box of positive transparencies.

The various images, many of which are identified and described via hand-labeling by those who originally created or worked with them, are broken into six loose subject categories: athletics, campus, departments, people, students, and the three WSU branch campuses. Campus consists of buildings, classrooms, Greek life, events, laboratories, and sometimes individuals. Departments consist of various photos of students and/or faculty from specific university departments, sometimes working with department equipment or materials. The departments include fine arts, performing arts, language, engineering, a variety of sciences, and more. The images date from 1982 to 2002.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The materials consist of contact sheets, print photographs, slides, and positive transparencies. The materials came to the MASC in several overlapping series of folders of images. These series were separated out, reorganized, and foldered to create four main series of images based on format. Within each series are a number of subseries based on subject content; these subjects are campus, departments, people, students, and branch campuses. Within these subseries the materials were organized alphabetically by subject then chronologically by date.

Acquisition Information

This collection of Washington State University photographs was received from News and Information Services in 2003 and retained in the WSU Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC) as UPC-0018.

Processing Note

This collection was processed by Kaitlyn Van Vleet over February to March and July to August of 2020.

Related Materials

WSU MASC holds a number of series of photographs which document the campus and its students, taken by Student Media, News and Information Services, Photo Services, and those department’s predecessors. Rather than listing them all here, we’d suggest looking at the list of the MASC’s photograph collections, as well as at the unprocessed collections (accessions).
