Historical Note

In 1928 USU established the department of forestry and range management (although classes in forestry were offered as early as 1891). Gradually during the 1930s, forestry and range took on greater autonomy within the School of Agriculture, until in 1938 it was set aside as a separate entity. The School of Forestry operated through 1945 when its name was changed to reflect other aspects of the curriculum involving range and wildlife management. The School of Forestry, Range and Wildlife Management persisted through 1957, and then as the College of Forestry, Range and Wildlife Management through 1966, when the present designation of College of Natural Resources was adopted.

Content Description

The College of Natural Resources photograph collection consists of color photos, black and white photos, negatives, VHS films, CD-Roms, a 16 mm motion picture film, and one 8 mm motion picture film. Box 1 contains images that document surveys completed by C. J. Olsen, an Assistant Regional Forester for the US Forest Service on aspen reproduction, soil and vegetation conditions, flood surveillance and control projects, and recreational structure standards mostly in Utah, but also Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada in the 1930s. Additional photographs include: CCC camp sites and projects; the production of the 1937 Claudette Colbert Company film, "I Met Him in Paris"; images and correspondence between Dr. Thadis W. Box and W. C. Glazener, the Assistant Director of the Rob and Bessie Welder Wildlife Foundation established in Sinton, Texas in 1954; photographs by Bill Shipler and the US Forest Service; and a documentary report on the changing "conditions and trends" of National Forests in response to human activity.

The VHS films document various issues of our National Forests and their ecosystems. The motion picture films are official productions entitled "Introduction to the National Forests in the US" and "Forest School"

The collection contains photographs and negatives of the USU College of Natural Resources faculty and students, as well as various events held by the college from 1990-2004.
