Historical Note

Christian Schuebel (1866-1949) was a lawyer, state representative, and one of the founders of the League of Oregon Cities. He graduated from the Oregon Law School in 1897, and began participating actively as a councilman for Oregon City. Over the next twenty years, he moved from being a justice of the peace, to deputy district attorney, while also serving in the Oregon House of Representatives in the 1913, 1915, and 1919 sessions. In 1925, Schuebel was a delegate to the meeting of city officials that created the League of Oregon Cities. Schuebel served as president of the League from 1928 to 1930.

Content Description

The collection consists of an account of Schuebel's life as researched and compiled by his daughter, Roberta Schuebel Caldwell (1897-2003). Relying on the personal accounts of Schuebel, his family members, genealogical data, and newspapers stories, Caldwell put together an episodic picture of her father's life and ideas. Also included is a photocopy of a remembrance of Chrisitan Schuebel printed in Western City following his death in April of 1949.
