Historical Background

Edward M. Burke and his wife Elizabeth, with financial support of Seattle investors, purchased and restored a building to the south of Seattle's downtown core which they later renamed the Kobe Park Building. It was built in 1910 by the Japanese American community and housed on the main floor the Nippon Kan Theatre. This theatre was a gathering place for the Seattle Japanese American community until the evacuation of 1942. The Burkes rented the theatre to performing and other groups, gave "Chinatown tours," amd leased space in the renovated office building. These ventures lost money and after litigation in 1990 the Burkes surrendered their interest in the Kobe Park Building.
