Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Edna May Peterson Price (1909-2007) was born May 18, 1909 to Joseph Ulrich Peterson and Anna Goffe in Salt Lake City, Utah—the third of ten children. Edna grew up in Salt Lake City, attending Wasatch Elementary, Bryant Jr. High, and West High School. While in university, Edna danced in the Orchesis Club, was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and was President of the Women's Athletic Association. She graduated from the University of Utah in 1931 with a B.S. in Physical Education. She married Walter G. "Pete" Price September 5, 1934 in the Salt Lake Temple. They enjoyed 43 years together. Edna worked as a lifeguard at Lagoon with Pete, and organized Red Cross Life Saving classes. She taught at Davis, Jordan Jr., Clayton Jr., and Southeast Jr. High Schools for 21 years. She received an Honor Award from the Utah Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation for 1969-70, and was nominated for Teacher of the Year in 1970. Over her life, Edna held offices for the YWCA, the Reserve Officers Association Ladies Club, the Utah State Legislative Council, Salt Lake Council of Women, and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints—teaching dance and participating in church-wide dance festivals.
Orchesis was a national dance organization originally founded in Wisconsin in 1917. Over the 1920s, Orchesis dance clubs became popular in universities across the United States. The University of Utah chapter of Orchesis was established in 1931 by Myrtle Clancy Knudson and Blanche Hayes. In 1931 the Spring Orchesis Concert, "Dance Drama," was held in the recently completed Kingsbury Hall. Until 1931, all Orchesis dance performances were held outdoors. From this time, the Orchesis performances were staged regularly within the theatre.
