The Ladd Livingston Collection spans the years 1972-2004 and consists of thirteen folders containing various documents attributed to Ladd Livingston and the Idaho Department of Lands. These documents include records, annual reports, and correspondence between Livingston, the Idaho Department of Lands, and the United States Forest Service. The topical focus of the collection centers around forest insects, disease, and preventative measures to support and preserve forests across the state of Idaho. Insects identified and discussed in Livingston's entomological reports and correspondence include the Douglas-fir bark beetle, the mountain pine beetle, the western pine beetles, spruce budworm, the Ips beetle, larch casebearer, and the western pine shoot borer. Some folders also include annual reports, informational brochures, aerial land surveys, accidents reports, and overviews of forest management training sessions.
Historical Note
Ladd Livingston worked as a forest entomologist within the Idaho Department of Lands. His work focused on evaluating and preventing the adverse effects of insects and disease in Idaho forests. The Idaho Department of Lands was established in 1919 as a government agency in Idaho managing State Trust Lands. The department's programming and responsibilities center around overseeing forestry practices, regulating surface mining, fire prevention, and land conservation within the state. The department also works to support outdoor recreation through initiatives such as the creation of designated trail systems and restoration projects to support and guide recreation.
