David Morrissey Collection on the 1980 Church-Symms Election, 1972-1984

Collection consists of research files compiled by reporter David Morrissey while covering the 1980 Idaho Senatorial race between Senator Frank Church and Representative Steve Symms. Morrissey was a journalist with the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello, Idaho (1976-77) and the Times-News in Twin Falls, Idaho (1977-80). His writing and research from this time period represent the bulk of the collection.

In addition to articles, the files also contain research notes, other research papers, and correspondence. The files on Frank Church cover the period 1976-1980, but also contain material dating from the beginning of his political career in the early fifties to his death in 1984. The financial reports are copies of campaign contribution and spending reports filed in Washington D.C. by committees active in the 1980 Senatorial campaign. The Church campaign is represented by the Idaho for Church Committee. The Symms records date from 1972 to 1980. Related to the Symms campaign, the National Conservative Political Action Committee, a major source of funding for the Anyone But Church committee (whose major focus was the unseating of Church and several other Democratic senators), is covered from January 1979 to the election in 1980.
