Summary
The George C. and Gene Hatch papers (1908-1999) documents the business and conservation achievements of the Hatch and Glassman families in Utah during the 20th century. Included are extensive materials pertaining to the operation of The Ogden Standard Examiner, The Standard Corporation, KUTV, KALL, and other Hatch/Glassman media ventures. Also included is historical and research material pertaining to the Hatch family's efforts to establish Utah's redrock wilderness as nationally protected space, as well as their work on developing Antelope Island as a state recreational resource.

Biographical Note

George C. Hatch (1919-2009) married Wilda Gene Glassman (1917-2005) in Ogden, UT in 1940. George soon became involved with the Glassman family's growing media empire in Ogden, kicking off a lifelong career as a media manager, owner, investor, and advisor. The Hatch/Glassman family was involved with a large number of media interests in Utah and the Intermountain West, including the Ogden Standard Examiner, KALL (radio), KUTV (television), Western Microwave, TeleMation, and others. Wilda Gene Hatch worked closely with her husband professionally, and served as the director of The Standard Corporation from 1955 to 1993.

George and Gene Hatch were also prominent supporters of the conversation and recreational development of Utah's wilderness lands, and frequently used their media outlets as a forum for these ventures. They worked closely with both lawmakers and grassroots activists to help form Capitol Reef National Park and Arches National Park, and ran a tireless legal and public opinion campaign to help establish Antelope Island State Park.

The business and broadcasting portions of the collection contain primiarily formal business documents; contracts, valuations, reports, assessments, minutes, agreements, etc. The wilderness and conservation materials tend to be more informal, containing more correspondence, clippings, editorial content, research articles, and the like.
