Historical Note
Swan Island is an island in the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. During World War II, the island was the site of one of Henry J. Kaiser's shipyards. The shipyard at Swan Island was managed by A. R. Nieman, a civil engineer from Vancouver, Washington. Between 1942 and 1945, the Swan Island Shipyard produced 147 T-2 tankers.

The collection consists of two letters that were sent to the tanker production workers at the Swan Island Shipyards in Portland, Oregon. The letters, written by Kaiser Company, Inc. owner Henry J. Kaiser and Swan Island Shipyard manager A. R. Nieman, congratulate the workers on having built a record number of tankers and oilers.
